I made a post a little while ago talking about how big corporations are evil and how I’m going to try and make an effort to support smaller businesses. I just have a point to add to that which I just thought of this week, after discussing business with my boss. She said that a lot of her clients (owners of independent boutiques) are struggling this season. We both know why, it’s because of all the malls and chain stores. It’s a shame because all of these stores are all selling the same thing and copying each other. The higher end chain stores are creating runway knockoffs, which is rather offensive to the true designers, and the lower end ones are copying the higher end ones. In the end, everyone looks the same.
Smaller brands are more unique though. They have a small design team and find inspirations themselves. My boss imports and reps a brand called Fever London, and if you read their seasonal look books you know that they keep it real. The whole look is very feminine and vintage, and it always stays that way. Same goes to any other small design company.
I’m doing quite well in my gradual boycott. To be honest, I haven’t been shopping very much lately as I’ve spent most of my money on a flight ticket, but my last purchases were from Motel Rocks, which is definitely a smaller company (although I know it’s bigger in the UK, I’ve seen it advertised via product placement in Skins). I got an adorable white tank dress with a neon painted union jack on it and I’m almost certain I’m the only girl in town with it!
